Message to School Board Candidate Kurdell

Ms. Kurdell:

I reviewed your advertisement in La Gaceta and protest in the name of truth and the integrity of the English language. You have not held to truth in your ad; you have abused words.

The ad title says you are “a proven leader.” No, Ms. Kurdell, you are a proven potted plant who never deviates from anything Ms. Elia tells you to do. It’s zeig heil to the superintendent no matter how extreme her orders.

You claim you will “fight for our public schools.” No, you will fight for the racket the administration and board conduct in ROSSAC to the detriment of the public schools and the public purse.

You proved this statement in the Erwin debacle when you pretended you didn’t know that Mr. Erwin was trying to report crime in the schools to the superintendent Earl the Pearl Lennard and his under-thugs Hamilton and Black. They pretended not to understand him. The board, the attorney, everybody knew what was going on. They knew the evil trio was giving Erwin the runaround and faking that they wanted to know the facts when they knew the facts but didn’t want to act on them.

A modicum of in-house crime was the price of doing business for Lennard and his lieutenants. The crime was ok since it accompanied their racket of wielding power and engaging in money grubbing in the public purse. Nobody did anything to intervene in the crime wave but looked the other way and pretended ignorance about the crimes Mr. Erwin reported and the retaliation by Lennard, Hamilton, and Davis against him during their attempt to fire him and deprive him of his pension. A whistleblower on school crime was the last thing this ethics-challenged trio wanted.
Ditto the board and everybody else because employees knew if they uttered a peep of support of Erwin, they would get the sack probably with no pension as well if the vindictive administration trio could pull that vile deed off.

The purpose of the Professional Standards Office is to keep lists of suspects and shut anybody up who lets out a whiff of condemnation of the administrative and board skullduggery. It keeps the schools in terror lest anybody protest the criminal behavior that goes on in ROSSAC.

As for “raising teachers’ pay,” that’s a perennial canard piped by you and the rest of the board: You raised teachers pay by a measly 2 percent this year, yet I heard that Steve Hegerty, head of public affairs, who started at $91,000 two years ago is now at over $101,000 now. That’s over a ten percent increase in pay compared to the teachers’ measly 2 percent. The other administrators and superintendent pull down huge pay checks while teachers often must work two jobs to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. Don’t lie and say you want to raise teachers’ pay; you want to rubberstamp huge superintendent and administrative pay and to hell with teachers.

When Ms. Elia’s contract comes up, it’s Katie, bar the door. She already makes $300,000, thanks to the board’s not looking out for taxpayers but for the superintendent, who means to have such a whopping exit salary that the postman will have to deliver her pension in a Publix shopping cart.

You of the board let Elia have a patronage bonus that allows her to hire buddies and kin into the high-level administration jobs, and she is free to bloat their salaries undeterred by the board. She does not hire qualified people, so the taxpayers don’t get their money’s worth. Cathy Valdez has an early-childhood degree in a job that should have a business degree. She’s incompetent in her job. Just recently Valdez did not insure a school project, a wall collapsed, and the district had to pay millions of dollars to repair the damage. She allowed an historic school to slip through her fingers for peanuts; it was then destroyed. When the historic-preservation community had her urged her to preserve the school, she ignored its advice. She lacks financial business savvy and a sense of the cultural significance of edifices that bespeak the community’s academic history.

The head professional affairs is Linda Kipley, who has a degree in home ec. No reputable university has a home-ec degree soiling its academic status and has not had since the twilight of the Paleolithic Era. Ms. Kipley has turned out to be a sadistic executioner of Ms. Elia’s vendettas. Attorney Gonzalez promised me three times to author a pamphlet to give to people entering the Professional Standards Gulag information to alert them to how they could protect themselves in the process. He didn’t do it. When I brought up the promise at board meetings and asked board members to tell him to come up with the pamphlet, none responded, including you. That shows how much concern you have for teachers and lower staff.

The board’s touting its devotion to equal opportunity is a hoot. Ms. Elia ordered that Ms. Kipley’s husband get a job that required a bachelor’s degree in accounting when he has only a high-school diploma. There were people who applied for this job with the degree and the experience the job description called for. Yet personnel’s Mr. Valdez passed over these to hire Kipley’s husband. That was a case of nepotism and buddy hiring if anything is. Yet the board didn’t say a word but rubberstamped the job for Mr. Linda Kipley without one question about the hiring being coincident with the board’s vaunted “We are an equal-opportunity employer” stamped on anything and anywhere. That slogan is an official lie that the board underwrites because it lets Ms. Elia hire unqualified buddies and sycophants and her pet’s husband. None of the board protests. You certainly don’t.

Connie Mileto, with a kindergarten background, got the chief political job because of the fawning dotage of no-fool-like-an-old-fool Dr. Hamilton. His broken-hearted wife divorced him for the activity accompanying this promotion and resigned her principal position one hears. This old fool is now up in Tallahassee with La Connie because one of the two jobs Elia invented for him was that of lobbyist on his retirement. The board did not ask for justification of this job creation in an economic downturn; it allowed it to roll past on the consent-agenda conveyor belt.
Now Hamilton joins Lamb and Ethridge as double dippers from the tax kitty.

Nor did board members ask questions when Hamilton got the heebie jeebies when it came time for him to retire and leave the scene of his triumph over his underlings in the school system and Ms. Elia created a boutique job for him to tide him over for several months until he calmed down and retired with the soothing prospect of the lobbyist job--a bad choice since he can't write a literate sentence. It’s hard to wean one’s self from graft. It’s addictive to those in the administration who have fed at the public trough for so long. Board members did not utter a peep in the taxpayers’ interest in these job-creation outrages. This conduct is poor representation for your claim of looking out for every penny of taxpayer money as you promised on the stump.

You can’t have excellent administration unless you have qualified people with some sense of moral responsibility to the taxpayers, the students, and the teachers. This administration comprises academic and professional weaklings who can’t do the jobs the superintendent hires them to do because they lack the brains and the training. No wonder there has been one crisis after another in the schools. Think of the transportation melt-down with a former bus driver as head of that department. The leadership from the administration is punk and abetted by a board who think punk is what the community, teachers, and students deserve.

You proclaim in your ad that you want to lower mileage and “cut wasteful government spending.” See Hamilton’s created jobs and the hiring of buddies throughout the system in a board and administration jobs program to assess the validity of this false claim.

You say you are “fighting to change the status quo” when you yourself have been the status quo for the last sixteen years. Fighting, my foot. You are the summary of the status quo. You should embroider "Ms. Status Quo" on all your outfits. If you were any less active in your board perch you would be motionless. The only time I have seen you animated was when you jumped on April Griffin for her asking to take an item off the agenda because it was a no-bid contract awarded to a former administrator.

You chided Griffin for being “disloyal” to the staff and affirmed that there was not a thing wrong with no-bid, you-scratch-my-back-and-I-will-scratch-yours bid procedures. Attorney Gonzalez jumped into full-throated support of no-bid contracts since his firm got his job 37 years ago in a no-bid scam. Candy Olson joined you in excoriating Griffin. Only Susan Valdes defended Griffin. The board scofflaws voted 5-2 to continue the no-bid racket with only Griffin and Valdes dissenting. You punched the green button first I bet.

Your ad says that you are “fighting” to “enhance screening procedures to expose those who would prey on our children.” The only time anybody is called to task about preying on the children is when the suspect is a teacher. Moral turpitude is tolerated and even encouraged for the ROSSAC denizens. Board Chair Jennifer Falliera initiated an affair on school grounds with Marc Hart, the previous head of the communications office. She haunted his office. She broke up his marriage, caused his divorce, and made his two little children suffer. The superintendent with the board’s collusion fired Hart to protect Fallieras’s “reputation.”

You on the board all knew the facts of this ugly sequence of this sleazy conduct. Yet you appointed Ms. Falliera as chair of the board. That cynicism shows how much you value board dignity. One doubts that any parent would want a person who could conduct herself as Ms. Falliera did on school time as chair of a board charged with protecting the interests of the school children of the county. I wonder how you would answer a constituent who asked you how you justified your vote to name Ms. Falliera chair of the board.

You say that you “demand that administrative leaders listen to parents, students, and teachers….” No reasonable person could infer such to be the case from your conduct. When parents come before the board to speak, the chair sneers at them and gavels them down mid-clause after three minutes. You say nothing about this rude treatment of parents. There is nothing to suggest in the board’s attitude toward parents when they brave the antagonism of the board to speak that shows any of the board wants to “listen to parents.” How many times have you spoken up for better treatment of parents in your sixteen years on the board? My bet is that it’s zero.
You claim you demand that administrators “listen to teachers.” Hooey and double hooey. Where were you when Ms. Elia imposed an extra class on teachers out of the blue without notifying them and giving them the chance to voice their opinions? What did you do when Ms. Elia purchased the multi-million-dollar Spring gimcrack program that had not worked in other institutions without notifying or consulting the teachers who had to implement it? Where were you when Ms. Elia forced teachers to dummy-down grades so that she could earn more “bonuses” in a new paradigm? This act insulted teachers’ professionalism because they wanted to give students the grades they earned; Ms. Elia’s greedy move deprived students of a rigorous education that would make it possible for them to get into better colleges.

The Board does not want to hear from teachers. I have e asked repeatedly to have the board grant teachers a permanent spot on the agenda so that they will feel welcome to come and give their insights. The board is silent when I bring this issue up. I wrote two board members whom I had supported with money and encouragement to get the item of a teacher slot on the agenda and to take it off the consent calendar for discussion. I bet my best frock that not one board member would have had the nerve to vote against the motion. Their resistance is cowardly, silent, and behind the curtain. They don’t want to admit publicly that they regard teachers as the field hands that produce the state money that the ROSSAC grandees decide what to do with. The board thinks the same as the administration on this issue.

I should point out that the two members whom I supported were Griffin and Valdes. They neither answered my email on their sponsoring a teacher slot on the board. Once board candidates get elected and pass through the magic ROSSAC doors, they don’t want anything to do with citizens who have ideas on how the board should run the schools. Ignoring voters is their idea of democracy. They take oaths of office not knowing the laws they swear to uphold.

I have never heard you demand anything in the two years I have observed the board except that Ms. Griffin stop asking for an end to no-bid contracts. You have been on automatic pilot for sixteen years. There is nothing in this La Gaceta ad persiflage that assures you won’t continue your usual collusion with the administration to deprive the county children, teachers, and parents of the better schools that are possible with an ethical, educated administration and a board that is concerned for its job of making the schools better and not making the administration’s louche rule go on as usual.

I wrote you about the apparent impropriety of your taking election money from the firms who have done or want to do business with the schools. There is an eerie connection between the scenes of Mr. Erwin’s taking the reporters to the top of a recently built school to show them the holes that caused leaking. Water incursion, bum air conditioners, even botched paint jobs characterized the problems that newly built schools featured that Mr. Erwin tried to alert the administration to.

How did the architects, contractors, and subcontractors get away with this sleazy work on schools? Who signed off on their payments for this shoddy work on public schools inhabited by the county’s children?

Answer: the Hillsborough County School Board approved the checks for this rip-off of the public.

Even an angel would be suspicious of graft.

Yet one sees on your donation list from the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections (below) such names as "The Architectural Practice, Inc., 5300 W. Cypress Street" ; "Allstate Construction, Inc., 5718 Tower”; ","Woodroffe Corporation Architects,5005 W. Laurel Street.”

One hopes your relationship with these firms is ethical. One is not sure, however, given the Erwin revelations. Somebody profited from lax oversight of the schools’ construction. As I wrote you before on this issue, the appearance of impropriety stains a public servant’s reputation. I suggest again that you should send these contributions back to the companies who sent them to you.

You quote La Gaceta’s endorsement of you at the end of the ad. It says that you deserve re-election because you “put children first.”

Hooey. You put your comfort as a go-along-to-get-along operative first; you put propitiating Ms. Elia first. The children are not even in the running. Nor are teachers, the schools in general, and the taxpayers. You are knee deep in the crony culture that has stained the Hillsborough County School leadership for years.

The Times and Florida Sentinal got it right: they recommend your opponent, Mr. Gorham, as your replacement. I agree. I don’t know if Mr. Gorham will be any better than you, but he can’t be any worse. And he has assured me that teachers will get a forum during board meetings. That one achievement would justify his election.

Yes, Elia threatened Patrick for my using some circumlocuation about the sleeping-around in ROSSAC that garnered jobs on the Casting- Room Couch. She said she gave Mileto and Kipley the right to sue La Gaceta for slander. I begged him to get the ACLU. That is the very kind of case it specializes in: the government picking on private industry, especially a newspaper.

Patrick is not a fighter. He's a diplomat. So I resigned and now blog. It's just as well. I am completely free in my blog, and nothing deterred me from exposing ROSSAC on-site adultery.

I talked to a First Amendment lawyer; she said only people with money---businesses--get sued for Internet comments. The litigious don't bother with us who don't have a pile of money.

Blogging is the better route for me and those like me. Patrick and I used to fight over diction all the time. I never did convince him that "sleep with the fishes" is not a sexual reference, that it refers to a murder in the criminal world when the victim's body gets thrown in the river instead of a reference to sex.

Patrick and I are good friends. I am as fond of him as if he were a son. lee

A Chat About English

Everybody is going to have to be patient while two English teachers talk shop here about language and the shoddy language training students get in the schools. I used to get students from area schools in college freshman English who couldn't write a literate sentence much less a paragraph or essay.

Mastery of language reigns the basic metric of education. No matter what else a person knows, he or she must first be at home in his or her language and be able to write and speak it literately.

A reader who is an English teacher sent me a message that I refer to in the first paragraph above but that I lost in my goofiness. I wish he or she would resend it. I would like to mount a copy of it in this place for others to read.

It's an important message that laments how poorly prepared the students who come into high school are in the English language. As I have often observed, I had the same experience with students entering from high school into my freshman-English classes. They would have passed English classes in high school but couldn't write a literate sentence much less an essay. This situation bewildered me. But I set about teaching them grammar, punctuation, and essay structure along with Shakespeare and Yeats and the rest of the gang that my course was supposed to cover.

I attack abuse of language wherever I encounter it. Review my defense of English to the head of Phi Beta Kappa below. I'd jump on the king of the world who abused the English language. The Bay Area Phi Beta Kappans will rebuke me. I will rebuke right back in more vivid language. lee

The National One Arises for Phi Beta Kappa

John Churchill has become the top guy at national Phi Beta Kappa.

One reads that this new leader will take an “indefinite” leave of absence from Hendrix, his college. He sounds as if he plans to hunker down at National Phi Beta Kappa for the duration.

We PBK members in the hinterlands far from the centers of flossy scholarship wonder what kind of guy Le Churchill is. We can get a hint by doing some forensics on our new head’s writing.

Secretary John Churchill’s fall Key essay comes to hand. It begins with an imagined condescending response to a prospective logic student and then displays some logic gymnastics to remind the uninitiated how dumb they are about logic folderol.

Ungenerous arrogance stains the remark to the student and shows why philosophy-department Laputans reign objects of tart assessments for their conduct in faculty lounges. Our national Phi Beta Kappa leader mispunctuates the condescending sentence.

With Dr. Churchill’s put-down of an aspiring logic student, we enter the domain of solipsism.

Further evidence of this gentleman's self-involvement is that he chose as subject for the Teagle-Foundation-funded “Deliberation of Things That Matter” a discussion that resides in Secretary Churchill’s bailiwick. Why couldn’t it concern the slide of Hemingway’s reputation or how come it took more than a hundred years after its founding for Phi Beta Kappa to admit women and blacks? Answer: Dr. Churchhill knows diddly about these and wouldn’t shine in the discussion.

At the end of the Key essay, Secretary Churchill advocates doughnuts as salubrious to participants’ performance in the Teagle exercise. I submit that Secretary Churchill is not thinking of doughnuts for the gang but of doughnuts for lui-meme.

Be clinical, outback Phi Beta Kappa members. Take a look at Dr. Churchill’s picture to discover the root of this doughnut strategy. It comes from Dr. Churchill’s relation with food.

This me-me-me approach portends narcissism at national Phi Beta Kappa headquarters in the president’s office. The staff is in for a lot of fetching and toting. Picking up dry cleaning may be in its future.

To top things off, Secretary Churchill can’t punctuate and has a shaky grasp of grammar.

This pile-up of negative evidence against Le Churchill rouses critters in tropical-clime Florida chapters with litigious instincts to rebel prospectively.

One of this tribe, I will go first.

I suggest that national Phi Beta Kappa’s quixotic admission standards must change.

National Beta Kappa has turned down the University of South Florida’s pleas for a chapter for years while at some colleges and universities with chapters as much as forty percent of the invitees shun the invitation to join. National PBK should close out those 40-percenters and open slots for institutions eager for a chapter such as USF. If the students can’t afford the fees at USF, the Bay Area Phi Beta Kappa must hold bake sales.

Phi Beta Kappa should stop its prissiness in selecting new chapters. While turning down USF, Phi Beta Kappa recently granted a chapter to nearby Eckerd College despite whacko punctuation’s bestrewing the Eckerd president’s online message that also displayed the rhetorical felicity of zilch. Literacy on the school’s Web page should be a requirement for granting a Phi Beta Kappa chapter. Ditto for Phi Beta Kappa’s national secretary’s appointment.

National Phi Beta Kappa should not search out minute centers of academic preciosity as chic choice but should embrace large redneck centers of learning that succor blue-collar parents’ offspring such as USF. To avoid doing so is unpatriotic and snotty.

One wagers that an examination of the national staff’s academic credentials would reveal that its members come from such big-state, working-class schools, where the tuition was within their parents’ budgets, This socially and academically insecure preference for boutique colleges by national Phi Beta Kappa is nothing but tryin’ to get above your raisin’ as we say in Georgia.

For this conduct, my tribe of aunts and genealogy whackos at our yearly dinner on the grounds at the family cemetery in Burnt Fort, Georgia, would accuse the culprit of a college degree’s making him or her uppity and would avoid dishing out any chicken and dumplings or big slabs of peach pie with hand-whipped cream to this family snoot.

The bottom line is that avoiding big gallumpy universities for little boutique ones is un-American. The uncouth many are at the heart of democracy both out and in academe.

Two of my seven grandsons now go to USF. Hence, I do what grannies are born to do: urge that national PBK rethink its shunning of USF.

What’s a granny for if not to lobby for a Phi Beta Kappa chapter at the university that two of her precious grandsons attend?

I suggest a contest that invokes Dr. Churchill’s automatic phallic ad bacullum metaphor to settle this request. This ad bacullum aside is the sort that men produce from their instinct to remind women that guys rule the world. Will we ever see the day when men abandon such tiresome phallic prancing to subdue us women? Can’t the head of Phi Beta Kappa be sophisticated enough to avoid it? Didn’t he take any psychology classes along with the logic hieroglyphics he parades in the first paragraph of his Key essay?

I suggest that national Phi Beta Kappa field a team to compete with USF in a punctuation smackdown. I shall offer my services as USF coach.
The USF team will mop up the floor with the national Phi Beta Kappa punctuation weenies, especially if punctuation-challenged Secretary Churchill insists on a team slot. In defeat, National Phi Beta Kappa must bow to the victor and bestow on USF a tardy PBK chapter.

Then my two grandsons will have a chance to become members of Phi Beta Kappa and even to become its national secretary. This is the reflected glory for which we grannies yearn.

Employers today beg colleges and universities to give them graduates not who can deconstruct Spinoza but who can write literate sentences correctly punctuated. Our Phi Beta Kappa secretary flouts this request in his own practice. He must start a review of his grammar primer in between ordering national staff around. This move may fend off impeachment rumbling in the fens and the bogs of the academic world from those of us who pick fights about literacy as diversion.

The decline in intellectual rigor that allows the secretary of Phi Beta Kappa national to circulate a badly punctuated missive with blowzy grammar to members nationwide provides evidence of the academic slide in the country.

Alas, alack, and weladay for the oldest honor society in the land to show such crude evidence of its joining forces with literacy barbarians.

I offer this missive as letter to the Key editor for publication in the time-honored tradition of academic vitriol’s honored place in our society since Phi Beta Kappa’s founding in 1776.

Excerpts from the Churchill message with corrections:

At the beginning of one semester a student, eager to enroll in the course, told me she wanted to take logic in order to learn how to think.”

“Eager to enroll in the course” is a restrictive adjectival prepositional phrase modifying general noun “a student.” Commas should not surround it. A comma would be well after “semester” since there is a long compound prepositional phrase beginning the sentence.

If(p, then q) and then q…but If(p then q) and not-p….

Unless the notation of logic has some exotic rituals of punctuation, then there should be a space between both if’s and the parentheses signs. This is a small punctuation civility that the president of Phi Beta Kappa should observe.

“especially the ad baculum: ‘If you…nose.’”

Usually a whole sentence precedes a colon. In your sentence, the colon were better a comma.

As a feminist I defy this penis-invoking metaphor. It must be the author’s way to remind women that men celebrate being guardians of the mighty phallic apparatus that rules the world in war and in rape. To an accusation of feminist paranoia, I answer that I have found being paranoid condign attitude to macho pretensions.

“People don’t just disagree about what the facts are, they disagree about what the facts mean.”

A comma splice ranks remedial-English mess-up. One expects a member of Phi Beta Kappa to recognize a sentence. If he does not—and especially if he sends messages to the membership as secretary--the fellow should review his grammar primer perhaps in study hall.

“And much of argumentation consists of trying to get the other person to take agreed upon facts as we do.”

The above models one of several instances in which Secretary Churchill omits a hyphen between two-or-more words acting as single adjective before a noun. This device helps the reader comprehend more easily.

It helps when people are polite and civil, and when they not only wait their turn, but also take their turn when it comes.”

The redundant comma after “civil” splits compound adverbial clauses. The redundant one after “turn” splits a compound verb.

“On the other hand, there are issues about protracted, perhaps intractable disagreements.”

The nonrestrictive element needs a comma on each side.

“There is learning to cope with frustration—frustration at the social level (‘He’s not even listening to me!) and epistemological frustration (‘No one could ever know that!)

The writer owes readers an end-punctuation period after the close of the parentheses.

“So much can go wrong that has nothing to do with logic, narrowly conceived.

The redundant comma cuts off a restrictive past participial phrase.

And so much of what goes right does so because of factors affecting our social and even animal nature.

“Factors” gets an apostrophe for possessive before the gerund. I have an interesting fight with the editor of the North American Cambridge English Dictionary on this issue (Grammargrinch.com). I think I carried the day. I ratted him out to those Oxford Dictionary guys in England who wear rump-sprung tweeds and perpetual looks of superiority.

And so much of what goes right does so because of factors affecting our social, and even animal, nature. It will be important to remember this the next time we are tempted to wander off into an abstract analysis of reasons and conclusions.

The pronoun "this" has no antecedent: the reader has to infer one. Requiring the reader to provide an antecedent for a pronoun ranks sloppy writing.

Secretary Churchill's Key essay:
Deliberating, Again

I used to teach logic. At the beginning of one semester a student, eager to enroll in the course, told me she wanted to take logic in order to learn to think. I suppressed the catty comeback: "Oh, no. If you don't already know how to think, you'll just fail logic." The unspoken retort does, though, lay bare something about the notion of a course in logic. It is true that if you can't think, you'll do poorly. So what are you being taught?

Some of an introductory logic course amounts to learning a kind of notation that formalizes what we can already do: If(If p, then q) and not p, then not necessarily not-q; but If(lf p, then q) and not-p, then not necessarily not-q. And if Socrates is man and all men are mortal, then. ... But what I enjoyed most were the so-called informal fallacies: the heap argument, the slippery slope, and the various ad hominem arguments, especially the ad baculum: "If you make that claim again, I'll punch you in the nose."

It is in these murkier regions that the human element of logic emerges. When people make cases for the things they hold true, arguments take on a distinctly human cast. People don't just disagree about what the facts are, they disagree about what the facts mean. And much of argumentation consists of trying to get the other person to take agreed upon facts as we do.

The word "deliberation" is rooted in a Latin word for weighing. We weigh facts, trying to assess their meaning. How much do we know and understand about that process? That's the question we decided to explore in Phi Beta Kappa's project called "Deliberation About Things That Matter," funded by the Teagle Foundation.

We asked several Phi Beta Kappa chapters to partner with a curricular authority on their campus - a dean, an honors program, a curriculum committee - to examine that question. How do people learn to deliberate? Can it be taught?

We wanted to draw on the variety and inventiveness of the chapters themselves, and so we placed no further restrictions on their designs. The chapter at a major state university in the southwest added follow-up discussions to a major speakers series that was integrated with a curricular reform exploration. Chapters at several small liberal arts colleges formed consortia of faculty who developed deliberative teaching and learning styles for their courses. Another chapter melded the deliberation project into a semester-long orientation series for new students. We had explicitly encouraged such blends, hoping for lasting effect.

We learned that coffee and doughnuts can be important. That's a symbolic statement gesturing toward an interesting array of human factors that seem to conduce to good deliberation. It helps when people know something about what they're discussing. It helps when people are polite and civil, and when they not only wait their turn, but also take their turn when it comes. Listening sympathetically to the opinions reasons of others turns out to matter a lot.

At a more profound level, there are issues about protracted. perhaps intractable disagreements, persistent uncertainties, and learning to live with clear resolution. There is learning to cope with frustration --frustration at the social level ("He's not even listening to me!") and epistemological frustration ("No one could ever know that!")

What has been most interesting so far - and we are a long way from having weighed these reports fully - is the importance of the matrix of human interaction within which deliberation occurs. So much can go wrong that has nothing to do with logic, narrowly conceived. And so much of what goes right does so because of factors affecting our social, and even animal, nature. It will be important to remember this the next time we are tempted to wander off into an abstract analysis of reasons and conclusions. Evidence matters, but so do doughnuts.

Hurrah for the Suzy Creamcheese Blog: It Gives Teachers a Voice in the Running of the Schools That the Board Fails to Give Them

Read the accounts of any School Board meeting and compare it with what you saw in person or on Ch 18. You scratch your head wondering how they edit what happens. It's a shallow pool in the editing room.

Ms. Brown and Ms. Stein:

I copied the above excerpt from The Wall, Suzy Creamcheese’s blog that the teachers flock to in order to express their unexpurgated opinions.

This teacher whom I quote above is right about the tepid and oblique comments of the press about school board meetings and ROSSAC vile conduct. I don’t know why you both don’t report things as they are when reviewing school-board meetings or reviewing administrative and board conduct off the dais. The answer is probably pressure from above.

Objectivity is an epistemological impossibility. Reports sift through individual consciousness and individual prejudice. In case of newspaper reporters, it coincides slavishly with the political courage or lack of it of the brass of the newspapers they work for. The level of courage displayed by a newspaper comes from the guts or lack of it of the paper’s top people, the ones who have insinuated their way up the journalistic administrative level by means of sycophancy and timidity.

Local papers have long colluded with the skullduggery that those who run the county schools engage in. It is a brand of journalistic cowardice that does no good for our students. The national election has constantly invoked the importance of education in our country. But how we will get good education without cleaning out the Augean stables of school boards and administration lairs is beyond me.
Administration in Hillsborough County comprises the academic dummies. They have degrees in marginal subjects with Styrofoam intellectual content. When they get out of some usually 3rd-rate college with an academic-lite degree, they head for administration because that’s where the money is. Smart college graduates go into teaching to be lorded over by the C and D students that clog administration.

The board is not interested in improving schools but in colluding with the administration to continue board members' sitting on the dais and implying to the community that they are sponsors of education. What hog wash. That stance gets refutation with board members' going along with anything the superintendent puts before them for their automatic approval.

The superintendent hires under-qualified people for administration slots whose chief credential is loyalty to the superintendent. These toadies garner up to $150,000 in yearly salaries. Compare that to teacher salaries. What does the discrepency say about shool-board aims? It says they don't give a damn as long as they sit in their ceremonial chairs on the dais.

The superintendent created two boutique jobs for superintendent administrative buddy Hamilton; these passed on the consent-agenda conveyer belt with not a murmur from the board--and not any comment in the newspapers, which act as stenographers for the board, not as astute observers or, God forbid, intelligent analysts.

Yet the board has the nerve to stamp “equal-opportunity employer” on every available surface. That claim is an abuse of the English language and a violation of the Federal equal-opportunity laws.

The proliferation of the blogs from the inside, non-administrative school people decry this situation encourages me. They do what the press is too complacent or too cowardly to do: tell what it’s like on the inside and tell how the administration with board complicity tolerates the retaliation by Elia and her goons inflict on any school employee with the courage to speak out openly. This retaliation is in charge of Linda Kipley, head of Professional Standards and the holder of a home-ec degree.

Gradually these inside critics will go public as their levels of indignation and courage rise. When enough do, the voters will smarten up as a result and wade into the school board and administration rackets to defeat complict school-board members, all of whom qualify for this colluder title now. That’s when the schools will improve and educate the students to a higher level of achievement.

There is nothing like knowing the facts when you are trying to change the world. I want to see how fast Steve Hegarty's salary rose after his hiring. He couldn't punctuate when the board hired him. I haven't checked his writing lately. He sneers at me when he comes into my orbit. Doesn't speak. Just sneers. Boo hoo. lee

I missed last meeting because one of my grandsons made me a new computer and left out my calender in the files transfer. I still want to see the man's personnel file who took Davis's place as head of the technology devision. I will give you a check for the file you have copied for me.

I need these data: Steve Hegerty made $91,000 when he was hired a couple of yearfs ago I believe; I saw a notation that said he now makes $101,000. Is that correct? What is his salary history with dates? On hiring he made how much? How many raises has he got since then and for how much? Thanks. ldd

In this latest case she abuses her power in defense of Elia and Kurdell. Here is a brief review of Falieros indescretions:

1) As attested in Mr. Harts divorce deposition Ms. Faliero and Mark Hart had an affair while Jeniffer was on the board and Mark was the PIO for the school district. Some of these indiscretions ocurred while travelling on school district business.

2) She has willingly moved out of the district she represents in violation of state statute. When she got caught she initially lied, then quickly scampered back to her district.

3) While illegally residing outside of her district in South Tampa she caused a public panic in her neighborhood after making wild eyed and erroneous statements regarding a robbery of her husbands residence. The Tampa Police Chief had to hold townhall meetings to calm the public.

4) She leveled unfounded charges at a local newspaper editor. In this instance she claimed that this upstanding member of the community was trying to illegally purchase surplus school district property. These charges were investigated and determined to be baseless.

5) And lets not forget her first attack on Ms. Griffin. This ocurred mere days after Griffin delivered a scathing performance review of Elia. Given this weeks revelations, it is easy to understand she was again abusing her power to defend her friend Elia.

Why the long winded history review? To make a point. This woman has issues AND is severely compromised. She is morally and ethically bankrupt and very sick. She should not be leading this district as she is clearly incapable of taking responsibility for herself.

Erwin's Betrayal by Bricklemeyer and Gonzalez

The Erwin Crucifixion continued

This communication below from Mr. Erwin shows how Bricklemeyer and Gonzalez betrayed him. He went to Ms. Bricklemeyer in the mistaken belief that she was ethical and cared that the crooks were robbing the school blind. She took him to Iago Gonzalez. He gave Gonzalez a statement (Gonzalez wanted to know the particulars of his case so as to warn his boss Lennard is my read.) Then Bricklemey and Gonzalez dumped him back into the clearing for the continuted torture by Lennard, Hamilton, and What's His Name.

Ms. Bricklemeyer went back to pretending she didn't know what was going on. Her playing dumb protected the complicit board and administration. It also gave her deniability.

Meanwhile, all Rossac personnel collaborated by sniffing the wind and getting the message that Erwin was a sacrificial lamb to the board and administration tolerance of corruption.

I have come forward er the Whistle Blowers Act as per our discussion with Mrs.

Bricklemyer. This is my effort to assist in determining ifthere has been theft or mismanagement of Hillsborough District resources. Upon the insistence of my wife, I
did hire an attorney to review the documents that we have prepared. I have cancelled future appointments with my attorney and consulting attorneys. I can't afford them and it is my desire to work with the school system.

I do not want to drag this process out. The stress has created a serious health threat to me. I have received professional counseling and am under constant doctor's care taking prescription medication. Nothing bas worked to eliminate life threatening high blood pressure that I had not experienced before. I am also suffering financially.

My wife and son have been through many tough times in their lives. Nothing has had a more negative impact on their lives than what they see me going through at this time. Their health and happiness are being compromised. Many of my friends and colleagues are also suffering from stress as a result of their concern for my health and me.

It has been suggested to me many times that I should wear a bullet proofvest and never travel alone. I was offered such a vest by our Hillsborough District Security Department and I refused to wear it. I never had great fear until recently. I was given information that leads me to believe that bodily harm could come to my family and IDC.

As I have said before, I will be happy to take a lie detector test on any of the information that I have supplied. All I would ask is that any person whose name I've used be willing to do the same.

Board members: Ms. Faliera is not temperamentally or intellectually or morally suited to chair the school board. She has shown this lack of capacity throughout her tenure as board chair.

This is what the board gets for appointing the board member who stalked and made a conquest of the head of Public Affairs, caused his divorce, inflicted suffering on his two young children, and then dumped him. He visited me and told me the whole sorry tale. If parents knew you harbored an adulteress homewrecker as board chair, they would not be pleased.

You ill serve the community and its children by appointing such a creature to chair the board. Ms. Falliera is too dumb for the job and thinks being a school board chair gives her the right to cuff people around using her gavel. She is too morally corrupt to know right from wrong much less Roberts Rules.

Replace the creature. Don’t sit there like cowardly lumps and let her disgrace the board. The locution that you should call out when she makes one of her ridiculous and illegal decisions is “I appeal from the decision of the chair.” She has to ask you why according to Roberts Rules.

Then say why you object to her behavior and ask for discussion and a vote.

The chair can’t kick out elected officials; she also can’t shut them up. They are superior to those assaults. The people have chosen them. And fire that worthless lawyer Gonzalez for not earning his pay by making clear to Faliera the error of her ways when she has stepped over the line.

Travel talk takes harsh turn By Letitia Stein, Times staff writer Published Tuesday, October 21, 2008 11:37 PM ________________________________________ TAMPA — A School Board discussion about travel turned into a battle of wills Tuesday with the chairwoman threatening to have a fellow board member removed from the room. Board member April Griffin was asking for permission to attend more than one conference this year. Chairwoman Jennifer Faliero stopped Griffin from repeating that request. "I am going to cut you off," said Faliero. "You are making the same point." Over Griffin's protests, Faliero banged her gavel, addressing her colleague in a civil but icy tone. "Ms. Griffin, you are now out of order," Faliero said. "Don't go the next step." When Griffin continued to speak, Faliero called out to a security officer by the door. "I have warned her twice," she said. "You are not going to take me out of this room," Griffin replied, as board member Doretha Edgecomb quietly pleaded to Faliero not to do that. "You are trying to cut me off, and I was not through, Madam Chair," Griffin said, raising her voice ever so slightly. Faliero gave Griffin one minute to finish, then moved swiftly to deny her request. In a 3-2 vote, Faliero, Edgecomb and Jack Lamb approved travel guidelines that included just one conference for Griffin, who voted no along with Susan Valdes. A committee of three board members recommended that each official attend just one major conference in a tight budget year. Griffin noted that no one else's travel was questioned, and that she has a contentious history with two of the three committee members. Griffin is backing Stephen Gorham, who is running against incumbent Carol Kurdell, a committee member. Faliero is another member of the group. And Griffin was quick to recall a teamwork training exercise last year where Faliero told her to change her style or resign. That day, Griffin stormed out in anger. Tuesday, she stayed, delivering a rebuke to Faliero near the end. "How can we expect our employees to not fear retaliation when they're seeing it at this dais?" Griffin asked. "Ms. Griffin, I appreciate your passion,'' Faliero replied, "but unfortunately you just don't like the word 'no.' " Faliero later said she never intended to have Griffin removed, but criticized her lack of respect for board rules. In fact, she had no authority to do so, board attorney Tom Gonzalez said. Griffin is asking Gonzalez for an opinion about whether other members can restrict her travel. She says the conferences enable her to learn more about balancing college preparation and career education in schools. She said she carefully researched each and was frugal on the trips. She wants to go to one in North Carolina and two in Florida. Total costs: $3,000. "Tonight was not petty for me at all. Tonight was me passionately arguing a point that I felt I had every right to argue to do what is best for my constituents," Griffin said later. "Jennifer Faliero … gavelled me down like she does other speakers and tried to tell me how to do my job." In other business, members praised a group of students taking American government who asked them for a policy change. The students had missed classes to attend recent Republican and Democratic presidential rallies. They face penalties for being absent, because they were not on school business or a religious holiday. They asked that the rules be altered so they could observe the political process they are studying without penalty. Members agreed to consider it.
