Calling in the Sisterhood

On the outskirts of Florence on the way to see David

Online comment from the Sisterhood: my experience from long years in the Women's Movement is that women can be witches and and shrikes, but they don't desert you in the clinches. I always trust the sisters. lee

Subject: [Lee Drury De Cesare's Casting-Room Couch] New comment on A Word to the Wise.

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "A Word to the Wise":

Such a shame that Faliero has ruined her daughters' lives. But shame on her ex-husband for not wanting to help raise the children. He doesn't want to pay any child support. What kind of parent doesn't want to pay anything for his children? The poor children have terrible role models for parents.

Ms. Perkins: I infer you to be the president of the women's ministry. So I write to you.

I appeal to your women's ministry because in a long life I have observed that women are braver than men in challenging wrongdoing. I have observed men far away and close up. The faraway observation is of the world's men; the close up is of my family's men: a husband of fifty-four years, a son, and seven grandsons.

Women don't have as much emotional investment in the social and ethical structures that men the world over have devised without women's input. So when we read in the paper today the hideous pedophilia that the Pope's spokespersons are denying, we believe women in that position would not have covered up the pedophile and torture of children and sent the pedophiles to other parishes to repeat the outrage.

Women would have courageously stepped forward and bore the consequences to take the blame in order to protect the children and punish the pedophiles publicly. Men in this vile situation are protecting an ecclesiastical power system from which they all benefit is my assessment; women's investment is always in children.

The bottom line is that I judge women more likely to be unorthodox in their methods of attacking the ills of the world than men because of the fact that they operate outside the male power system and had only indirect part in devising it and thus have less invested in it. Abigail Adams wrote her unresponsive founding-father husband to "remember the ladies." He ignored her.

I hope, therefore, that the women of your ministry can think of a way to intervene in the situation of the board incumbent that I describe in my blog. I know nothing of her opponent but that he is a druggist and that he doesn't have much political sense or is too insecurely prissy to have answered my call when I left my name on his recorder. But whatever his failings, he can't be worse than Ms. Falliero to serve on the school board.

District 4, your district I believe, has had this school-board incumbent named Jennifer Falliero for four years. I believe she is unfit to serve in that office for a number of reasons but likely to be elected unless voters learn her history on the board. Incumbents are hard to oust. If voters don't know the facts of her incumbency, Falliero returns for four years of more of the same. I outline the Falliero conduct that I deplore on my blog discussing the Hillsborough County school system: leedrurydecesarescasting-roomcouch.blogspot.com.

Having learned from Juvenal, Rabelais, Swift, and The Daily Show that satire ranks the best way to highlight and correct problems, I invite you to read my comments on Falliero and assess her suitability to serve as a board member that controls not only the educational but the ethical environment of the children's community.

Maybe your organization could have a seminar and invite Ms. Falliero to come and talk about the moral duties of a person serving on the school board and as a single mother of two teenage daughters. If you do, then pray let me know so that I can attend and drag my husband. I can provide a truth meter for Ms. Fallieres's comments since I have closely observed the board and her conduct on it for over two years.

I suggest you invite her opponent, Stacy White, a druggist who I fear would presently on any podium wimp out because of some kind of dopey chivalric code that men--even those who behave the worst--adopt when confronting a woman, especially one as good looking as Ms. Falliero. Be sure to invite Ms. White especially for she may well be the brains and the strength of the family and should be running instead of Stacy. In any event, I suggest that Stacy be not on the podium but in the audience. And I suggest you give the audience ample question time.

The church people in the little town in which I was born, White Oak, Georgia, don't pay a bit of attention to the artificial Constitutional separation of church and state. They talk politics in the stream of gossip at Wednesday prayer meetings as well as exchanging hound-dog profiles or recipes for the dip that somebody made for the snack table. I leave to you the refinements for dealing with this church-state impediment. Men are afraid of women in packs, so approach your male gatekeeper in a group for permission to do anything is my advice.

Don't forget to invite me to attend if you figure out a public way to deal with this moral problem of the conduct of a school board member that makes her unworthy of the position. I am Episcopalian, but a lot of my Georgia clan is Baptist, so I will feel right at home.

Our family lived in South Tampa's old section of Beach Park before our children grew up; then we moved to our vacation condo in Madeira Beach. It's big enough for two people, and I can watch from my balcony the dead-white German tourists in scanty bathing attire blister themselves to a faretheewell.

Our four children went to Grady, Coleman, and Plant. We still have one grandson in the Hillsborough County schools. He starts Plant in the fall.

Sincerely and in sisterhood,
